From Wood to Art
The creation journey in 10 steps — designed in Europe, crafted in Africa, finished to last.
10steps
6–12months rough sculpture
100%in-house control
Step 1 / 10
1
Conceptualisation
Inspiration becomes a sketch. Product type, design, style, size, and key lines are defined, then debated within the Europe–Africa team to choose the best form from solid wood.
2
Endorsements
Implementation approval is obtained from African Natural Resources under yearly authorisations, and—from the human side—from all tribe members involved.
3
First Disengagement
Initial roughing is done in the forest where the wood lies, reducing weight for transport. The roughly shaped piece is then hauled to a road and moved to the workshop.
4
Refining the Concept
On the basic structure, the team consolidates the final idea and defining elements—blending African artistic style with European (often British) design.
5
Rough Sculpture
The wood is transformed into a rough, unfinished form. This creative stage takes 6–12 months depending on size, style, material, complexity, and weather.
6
Fundi Knife
A skilled craftsperson scrapes material behind the carver, a focused operation that can take up to a week.
7
Fundi Polish
A polishing specialist brings the surface to life—typically around two weeks of dedicated work.
8
Acclimatisation
The finished carving is brought to Europe and stabilised for several weeks. Moisture and movement are monitored to minimise cracking over time.
9
Varnishing
Protective coatings are applied and left to cure properly to seal and preserve the work.
10
Final Details
Upholstery and finishing elements are added. Timing varies to ensure the one-of-a-kind piece matches the original sketch with enduring quality.
